What is CBG?

CBG, a cannabinoid, is lesser known then CBD or THC and is gaining marketable interest and research into its possible health benefits. Derived from the cannabis plant and referred to as a ‘minor’, CBG (cannabigerol) is found as a low percentage active ingredient. In short, it is not present in as large of concentrations as the more common cannabinoids.

Since CBG is not as common, fewer studies have been done on its effects on the human body. However, interest is growing as new information is learned and more products containing CBG are being developed as other hemp-related products continue to gain popularity.

How Does CBG Work?

The effects of CBG are non-intoxicating and the same goes for CBD. That is where the similarities seem to end because these two elements work in different ways as they respond to dissimilar receptors. What does this mean? In our bodies, we have a cannabinoid processing system called the endocannabinoid system. This system has two receptors called CB1 and CB2. These receptors respond quite differently to mental and bodily functions and are located in different parts of the body.

Researchers believe CBG may stimulate the production of endocannabinoids in the brain and possibly lessen anxiety and elevate mood. Kind of the opposite of THC. They are also looking into the positive effects of CBG for the following issues: glaucoma, anxiety, depression, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, and even appetite suppression. Some suggest CBG has the ability to relieve pain as well.

How Can CBG Help Runners?

Let’s make a list of positive ways CBG can help runners as the research suggests:

  • Attention span
  • Increased motivation and focus
  • Enhanced pleasure
  • Regulating appetite
  • Improved sleep

These possible benefits are leading to increased awareness of both CBD and CBG. As the research continues, keep in mind that CBG is non-intoxicating so runners won’t be getting high from what is referred to as the ‘mother’ of all cannabinoids.

Is CBG Legal?

The 2018 Farm Bill, makes CBG legal as a product derived from the hemp plant. In review, both CBD and CBG products are legal, and research suggests that CBD assists with pain and inflammation while CBG is generally better with attention span and focus.
